New Jersey American Water finalizes $6.4M acquisition of Hopewell Borough Water System

New Jersey American Water officially completed its acquisition of the Hopewell Borough water system on Tuesday, a move set to integrate approximately 930 customer connections into the utility’s statewide network. The $6.4 million transaction follows a voter-approved referendum from November 2025 and final authorization from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities.

As part of the acquisition agreement, New Jersey American Water has committed to a $7 million investment in the Borough’s water infrastructure over the next five years. Priority projects include:

  • System Upgrades: Replacing aging fire hydrants, water mains, and customer meters.
  • Service Line Replacement: A focused initiative to identify and replace all existing lead and galvanized steel service lines.
  • Water Quality Improvement: The utility will permanently shut down the Borough’s single operating well—which has exhibited elevated PFAS levels—and transition the community to water sourced from the company’s Canal Road and Raritan Millstone Treatment Plants, which meet current state and federal safety standards.

“By partnering with New Jersey American Water, we are addressing long-term infrastructure needs today while securing dependable, high-quality service and stable rates for our community,” Hopewell Borough Mayor Ryan Kennedy said.

For residents, the transition brings immediate access to the utility’s service resources, including the MyWater online account management portal and the H2O Help to Others financial assistance program for qualifying customers.

“As the community’s water provider, we’ll start by stabilizing rates, making smart, targeted investments to strengthen the system, and working to address PFAS by first transitioning away from the system’s existing well,” Mark McDonough, president of New Jersey American Water said.

New Jersey American Water plans to send detailed information to all Hopewell residents in the coming weeks. In the interim, customers can find service information on the company’s dedicated webpage at newjerseyamwater.com under the “Customer Service and Billing” section.

This acquisition marks the tenth such transaction for New Jersey American Water in the past five years. The company continues to prioritize expansion in New Jersey, having added more than 25,000 customers to its footprint through similar acquisitions during this period. The utility currently provides water and wastewater services to approximately 3 million people across the state.
