Addressing one of the country’s most pressing and hazardous waste challenges, international recycling leader TerraCycle has announced the nationwide launch of its new Nicotine Vape Device Collection and Recycling Service.
Operated through its TerraCycle Commercial division, the program provides a compliant, scalable solution for used electronic cigarettes and nicotine pods, which have rapidly proliferated as one of America’s fastest-growing waste streams.
Improperly discarded vapes have long plagued municipal waste systems. Because disposable e-cigarettes contain volatile lithium-ion batteries, they pose severe fire hazards when damaged, compacted, or exposed to extreme heat inside garbage trucks, sorting facilities, and landfills. According to a PIRG report on vape waste, fires sparked by discarded disposable vapes cost waste facilities at least $95 million annually in the U.S. alone.
Until now, few viable, large-scale pathways existed to manage these complex electronics safely.
“For years, used vapes have been one of the fastest-growing waste management challenges. These devices present real risks when improperly handled, and until now, there has been no clear path to a scalable recycling solution,” Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle, said. “Through the dedication of our R&D team, our operations and compliance experts, and the strategic investments made to grow TerraCycle, we are proud to deliver a national solution for vape device recycling in the United States.”
Designed to meet federal and state regulatory frameworks, the prepaid program caters to households, municipalities, schools, hotels, and managed facilities. The all-inclusive service fee covers the specialized collection container, inbound and outbound shipping, device recycling, and compliant nicotine pod disposal.
Containers are available in three convenient sizes tailored to collection volume:
- 1.25-Gallon: Holds approximately 30 devices (22 lbs. weight limit)
- 2.5-Gallon: Holds approximately 75 devices (35 lbs. weight limit)
- 5-Gallon: Holds approximately 155 devices (55 lbs. weight limit)
For larger-scale organizational needs, TerraCycle Commercial also offers bulk pallet and FTL (Full Truckload) shipments as a cost-effective alternative to hazardous-waste incineration. Through proprietary processing, compliant hardware is systematically disassembled and sorted for material recycling under TerraCycle’s strict Recycling Guarantee, while residual nicotine pods are safely managed via compliant incineration.
The U.S. rollout builds upon the proven success of TerraCycle’s VapeCycle program in New Zealand, which has successfully captured and recycled more than one million devices. This domestic expansion is further supported by recent acquisitions and ongoing capital-raising efforts through TerraCycle US’s Regulation A investment offering.
Organizations and individuals looking to adopt the new recycling service can find further details or order collection containers by visiting vapecycle.com or exploring the TerraCycle US investor portal.
