Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) has been selected as one of 18 new schools nationwide to join the prestigious Metallica Scholars Initiative (MSI).
Supported by a $75,000 grant from the foundation All Within My Hands (AWMH)—the philanthropic organization created by the members and management of the rock band Metallica—RVCC will use the funding to fuel specialized workforce training for local students entering New Jersey’s booming biopharmaceutical sector.
“We appreciate that Metallica understands the importance of the trades and workforce education in today’s world, and this generous funding will enable Raritan Valley Community College to prepare students for sought-after roles in New Jersey’s rapidly expanding biopharmaceutical industry,” RVCC President Michael McDonough said.
The $75,000 award will directly support 20 learners through a specialized two-tier educational pathway via the college’s Workforce Training Center. The curriculum leads to two high-demand certifications:
- Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Professional
- Pharmaceutical Aseptic Cleaning and Processing
Graduates will be positioned for immediate employment in critical regional roles, such as entry-level lab technicians, cleanroom operators, and biomanufacturing technicians. In addition to technical instruction, students will receive robust career support, including resume-building workshops, mock interviews, and direct engagement with potential employers.
“Many of the state’s employers consistently report critical workforce shortages in entry-level lab technicians and cleanroom operators,” Conrad Mercurius, executive director of Workforce Development and Career Education at RVCC, said. “The Metallica Scholars Initiative will help RVCC address those vital employment needs.”
Now in its eighth year, the Metallica Scholars Initiative is launching its largest funding cycle to date, committing over $3.3 million. RVCC joins a cohort of 93 participating community colleges across the United States, alongside a brand-new international expansion into the United Kingdom.
Reflecting on the program’s evolution, Metallica frontman James Hetfield shared, “This thing started as a dream. Now our program is changing lives. To expand our impact on a global scale and support even more students is so rewarding.”
