Following a surge in traveler volume that far outpaced initial projections, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Board of Commissioners has authorized $110 million to fund major expansion projects at Newark Liberty International Airport’s award-winning Terminal A.
The approved funding kicks off a two-part growth strategy designed to meet rising passenger demand and advance the agency’s broader EWR Vision Plan, which aims to completely transform the airport into a world-class travel hub.
Key Highlights of the Expansion
- Southern Expansion ($100 Million): Construction will begin in 2027 on a 25,000-square-foot southern addition. Set to open in 2029, it will feature two new common-use gates, expanded seating, new restrooms, and grab-and-go concessions.
- Northern Expansion ($10 Million): Initial planning has been authorized for a larger northern expansion featuring six additional common-use gates. A phased opening is planned between 2030 and 2032.
- Soaring Demand: While original forecasts estimated Terminal A would serve 13 million passengers annually, the facility handled approximately 18 million travelers in 2024—nearly 40% above capacity.
- Economic Impact: The southern expansion alone is projected to generate 750 job-years, $76.6 million in wages, and $173 million in overall economic activity.
Opened to widespread acclaim in 2023, Terminal A was engineered specifically with future expansion in mind. It quickly captured top-tier industry recognition, including being named the World’s Best New Airport Terminal and earning a five-star Skytrax rating in 2024.
The newly authorized projects are a cornerstone of the comprehensive EWR Vision Plan. Beyond Terminal A, the multi-billion-dollar modernization effort includes plans for a brand-new Terminal B, a modern and reliable AirTrain system, and completely redesigned roadway and taxiway networks to streamline operations and minimize flight delays.
“Terminal A has set a new standard and attracted far more passengers than anticipated. This expansion will help us meet that demand and the needs of those travelers, create good-paying jobs, and continue building the modern, world-class airport New Jerseyans deserve,” Gov. Mikie Sherrill said.
