New Jersey City University (NJCU) on Tuesday launched a new Minor in Finance, available immediately for students this semester. The program is unique in its dual-track approach, designed to provide a tailored financial education for two distinct groups of students: business majors and those from other disciplines.

The new minor recognizes that financial literacy is crucial for all professionals, regardless of their chosen field.

“Financial literacy and expertise are increasingly critical in today’s economy… This minor provides students with practical skills that will serve them throughout their careers, whether they’re working with financial departments in their organizations or making informed personal financial decisions,” Zhimin Wang, Finance Department co-chair, said.

For business majors, the minor is a 15-credit program building on existing core coursework. It includes four additional finance courses and one elective, covering topics such as Investment Principles, International Finance, Portfolio Analysis, and Capital Markets & Financial Institutions.

The second track is specifically for non-business majors, emphasizing foundational financial literacy and management skills that can be applied to diverse fields such as technology, healthcare, or liberal arts. This track includes a course on Financial Literacy: Strategies for Financial Success, which also fulfills general education requirements, as well as courses in Managerial Finance and Capital Markets & Financial Institutions.

Donna Adair, interim provost, highlighted the program’s role in providing “practical, career-relevant education that serves students across all disciplines.” She noted that the minor will better equip graduates to “navigate the financial complexities of their professional and personal lives.”

Students can declare the Minor in Finance through their GothicNet account. The program is part of NJCU’s ongoing commitment to offering career-relevant education that prepares students for success in an evolving job market.
