Amazon is not getting out of the grocery business, as its continued ownership of Whole Foods shows.
But the company recently announced it will lay off more than 30,000 corporate workers nationwide and will close all Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh grocery stores around the country – a move that will result in 871 layoffs in New Jersey, according to a WARN notice filed with the department of labor.
Amazon Fresh stores in Eatontown, Lodi, Paramus and Woodland Park will close.
When the company announced its plans (including 16,000 layoffs nationwide connected to the two chains), Amazon officials said some of Fresh and Go locations will be converted into Whole Foods Market stores.
Amazon has 25 Whole Foods locations in the state and has announced plans to open future locations in Jersey City, Skillman, Wayne and Woodcliff Lake.
