Holy Name Medical Center launches ACGME-accredited Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program

Holy Name Medical Center has received full accreditation for its new Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This achievement marks a significant expansion of Holy Name’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) program, enhancing its commitment to medical excellence and compassionate patient care.

The first class of residents for the new program is slated to begin in the summer of 2026.

The residency is built upon Holy Name’s long-standing dedication to high-quality, patient-centered care. It aims to equip young physicians with the clinical, research, and educational skills necessary to thrive as leaders in women’s health through a culturally sensitive, evidence-based, and comprehensive educational experience.

“Our mission is to provide an exceptional learning environment where residents can develop the full spectrum of skills required to excel as obstetricians and gynecologists,” Dr. Sharyn Lewin, Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program director at Holy Name said. “By integrating community-based training with academic rigor, we are preparing physicians to not only deliver excellent clinical care but also lead with empathy and integrity.”

Residency training, which follows medical school, is crucial for new physicians to specialize. Residents in Holy Name’s program will train alongside experienced clinicians, conduct research, and work to expand healthcare access within the community.

Dr. Vasantha Kondamudi, chief medical officer and designated institutional officer, stated, “This program represents Holy Name’s dedication to advancing women’s health and medical education in our community.”

The program is guided by the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology, ensuring a robust curriculum that prepares graduates for eventual board certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology or the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. ACGME accreditation is mandatory for residents to be eligible for board certification exams and, in many states, to obtain a medical license.
