In a major win for New Jersey’s pockets and its power grid, PSE&G announced Thursday that its massive energy efficiency push is now saving customers nearly $960 million every year.
The utility’s latest update reveals that since the current program cycle launched in October 2020, approximately 500,000 residential customers and 22,000 businesses have opted into upgrades that are permanently lowering the state’s energy demand. To sweeten the deal, PSE&G has shelled out $1.4 billion in rebates to help offset the initial costs of everything from high-tech smart thermostats to industrial-scale HVAC systems.
Residential participation has skyrocketed, with homeowners increasingly turning to efficiency to combat rising utility costs. Key residential milestones through December 2025 include:
- 108,000+ Home Energy Assessments completed.
- 364,000 Smart thermostats purchased via the PSE&G Marketplace.
- 154,000 Rebates issued for energy-efficient appliances.
- 34,000 Old, energy-hogging appliances responsibly recycled.
Additionally, 32,000 customers have joined “Demand Response” programs, which reward users for shifting their energy use during peak summer heat to help keep the statewide grid stable.
The impact isn’t limited to homes. Nearly 22,000 New Jersey entities—including hospitals, schools, and small businesses—have completed roughly 35,000 projects.
A notable success story includes the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, which utilized the “Direct Install” program to modernize its historic headquarters. “Before the upgrades, we were dealing with ongoing repairs and inefficiencies,” Christine Lee, facilities manager for the NJ Chamber said. “Today, the building is more comfortable, more reliable… we’re able to focus our resources on serving our members.”
The efficiency program has become a vital part of the New Jersey economy, supporting over 9,300 clean energy careers.
- Trade Allies: More than 1,000 trade partners and 100 union-affiliated contractors are on the ground installing these upgrades.
- Union Impact: Union labor has directly executed more than $130 million in energy efficiency investments.
The cumulative energy saved is staggering. Annual savings currently sit at 3.3 million MWh of electricity and 83 million therms of natural gas.
This avoids more than 2.4 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually, which is the environmental equivalent of taking over 530,000 gasoline-powered cars off New Jersey roads every year. The electric savings alone are enough to power 475,000 homes for a full year.
“Our energy efficiency programs are making a real difference for households and businesses across New Jersey,” Lauren Thomas, PSE&G Vice President of Clean Energy Solutions said. “We’re focused on maintaining a stable, consistent program framework that supports the workforce and encourages continued investment.”
