Care in hospitals is about more than addressing the medical issue for which they were admitted — it is about ensuring that patients are protected from additional issues once they arrive.
Reducing, if not eliminating, medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections has been a top priority in the state’s hospitals for years. This morning, that effort is being recognized by The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit advancing patient safety.
Twice a year, Leapfrog rates hospitals on safety, awarding grades from “A” to “F.” In its Fall of 2025 survey, New Jersey ranked No. 3 in the nation for the percentage of “A” hospitals (52%). Even more, 83% of hospitals received an “A” or a “B” grade.
Additionally, New Jersey has the highest rate of Leapfrog Hospital Survey participation in the country: 100%.
The New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute, which serves as the Regional Leader for Leapfrog, applauded the news.
“We are proud of the commitment to transparency and safety shown by our New Jersey hospitals,” Adelisa Perez-Hudgins, VP of Quality at the Institute, said. “We congratulate our ‘A’ hospitals and continue to support all hospitals working to improve patient outcomes and experiences.”
Here’s the breakdown of New Jersey Grades:
-
“A” hospitals: 35 (52%)
-
“B” hospitals: 21 (31%)
-
“C” hospitals: 10 (15%)
-
“D” hospitals: 1 (>1%)
-
“F” hospitals: 0
Five hospitals went up a grade, six went down and 56 had no change. The total number of hospitals graded was 67. Two hospitals did not receive a safety grade because there was not enough data available: Bergen New Bridge and The Heights University Hospital (formerly CarePoint Health Christ Hospital).
Here’s a look at how all of the hospitals were graded:
