When longtime Devils fans picture their favorite John MacLean moment with the Devils,
they look past the Stanley Cups he won as a player (1995) and an assistant coach
(2003). They go to the overtime goal he scored in Chicago in the final game of the 1988
season.
The goal put the franchise into the playoffs for the first time – knocking the Rangers out
in the process, for good measure.
MacLean, a key figure in the good, the bad and the ugly of a franchise that grew into
one of the league’s best, will be honored Tuesday when he becomes the fourth member
of the franchise’s Ring of Honor.
MacLean will be honored during the on-ice ceremony with his wife, Adrienne, and two
sons, Kyle and John Carter. The ceremony will feature a tribute video showcasing
highlights of his career, special acknowledgements, and gifting, with more video
storytelling featured throughout the game.
There will be plenty to discuss.
MacLean was New Jersey’s first selection – sixth overall – in the 1983 Entry Draft. He is
all over the team’s all-time statistical lists.
- Games played: 934 (6th)
- Points: 701 (2nd)
- Goals: 347 (2nd)
- Assists: 354 (4th)
MacLean will be the fourth member of the Ring of Honor, which started in 2017 with the
induction of the team’s founder, John McMullen, and also includes legendary coach
Jacques Lemaire and three-time champion Sergei Brylin.
Built to celebrate contributions to the legacy and tradition of the franchise, the Ring of
Honor presented by Citizens highlights individuals who have impacted the organization
on and off the ice.
Expect the ring to grow. Devils officials have said they intend to induct another honoree
each season for the next five.
Tickets are still available for the game.
Devils alumni and dignitaries currently scheduled to appear include: Tommy Albelin,
Martin Brodeur, Aaron Broten, Sergei Brylin, Tom Chorske, Ken Daneyko, Jim Dowd,
Bruce Driver, Lou Lamoriello, Jacques Lemaire, Peter McMullen, Chico Resch, and
Scott Stevens.
