New partnership creates direct pipeline for Middlesex College students to Kean University

Middlesex College and Kean University have officially signed a landmark articulation agreement designed to streamline the journey for future teachers. The partnership ensures a “seamless” transfer process for students in specific education programs, effectively eliminating the credit loss and financial barriers that often hinder community college students pursuing four-year degrees.

The agreement comes at a critical time for the Garden State, as school districts continue to grapple with a persistent teacher shortage. By smoothing the transition from an associate to a baccalaureate degree, the two institutions aim to accelerate the flow of qualified educators into New Jersey classrooms.

The new agreement specifically targets three high-demand certification tracks. Students enrolled in these programs at Middlesex can now transition to Kean University with the confidence that their credits will be fully recognized:

  • Elementary Education (K-6) with Endorsement in Teaching for Students with Disability (TSD)

  • Early Childhood Education (P-3) with Endorsement in TSD

  • Elementary Education with a Bilingual Education Certification (K-6) option

To maintain high standards, transfer students must meet specific academic benchmarks, including a minimum 3.0 GPA. This ensures that Middlesex graduates are prepared for the rigors of Kean’s curriculum, which is backed by its Carnegie R2 research designation.

The heads of both institutions emphasized that this partnership is rooted in student equity and regional economic health. Middlesex College President Mark McCormick expressed his excitement, stating that providing accessibility and support is central to the college’s mission and that the agreement will significantly benefit students on their journey to becoming educators. Kean University President Lamont O. Repollet echoed this sentiment, noting that the partnership “anchors down” to create an equitable pathway that removes traditional barriers of cost and credit loss. He added that the collaboration strengthens the region’s workforce pipeline, ensuring the next generation of innovators has a direct route to a world-class education.

Dionne Miller, Middlesex College Vice President of Academic Affairs, highlighted the practical benefits for students, noting that the agreement reduces uncertainty and allows future teachers to “move forward with confidence.”

By aligning curriculum standards and grade expectations through collaboration between faculty and deans from both schools, the partnership creates a reliable route for Middlesex graduates to complete their bachelor’s degrees at Kean, which remains a top-tier choice for education majors in New Jersey.
