PSE&G energy efficiency initiatives surpass $1B in annual customer savings

Garden State utility customers are seeing major relief on their monthly utility bills. Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) announced that its Clean Energy Future energy efficiency programs have officially crossed a major milestone, now generating more than $1 billion in annual customer savings.

Since the initiatives launched in October 2020 through March 2026, nearly 525,000 residential and business customers have participated, leveraging home assessments, appliance rebates, smart thermostats, and targeted building upgrades to lower their energy use and keep costs manageable.

Tangible savings and environmental impact

The scope of the program’s impact stretches far beyond individual household bills, delivering massive energy conservation and environmental benefits across New Jersey:

  • Electricity Conservation: Delivered approximately 3.4 million megawatt-hours (MWh) in annual electricity savings—enough to power over 497,000 homes for a full year.
  • Natural Gas Reduction: Totaled roughly 87 million therms in annual gas savings, matching the emissions impact of taking more than 550,000 gasoline-powered cars off the road.
  • Carbon Reduction: Combined savings help avoid approximately 2.5 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually.

To make these upgrades more accessible, PSE&G has delivered roughly $1.1 billion in customer rebates and incentives. Key residential milestones include completing more than 111,000 home energy assessments, helping customers purchase nearly 373,000 smart thermostats through the PSE&G Marketplace, and recycling more than 36,000 older appliances.

Supporting local businesses and workforce growth

Businesses throughout the state are also capitalizing on the programs to modernize facilities and free up operational capital. Approximately 22,500 businesses—including more than 2,200 small businesses—have participated, completing nearly 36,000 commercial and industrial projects. Small business participants alone are realizing roughly $31 million in annual energy savings.

Locally, projects like the recent municipal upgrades in Rochelle Park—where LED lighting, high-efficiency HVAC systems, and pipe insulation at the town’s recreation center, fire headquarters, and DPW building slashed energy costs—highlight how public entities are reinvesting savings back into community services and public safety.

Furthermore, the statewide push is driving economic activity, supporting approximately 9,300 jobs through a robust network of over 1,000 trade allies and union partners.

“Generating more than $1 billion in annual customer savings reflects the tangible impact energy efficiency is having for customers across New Jersey,” Lauren Thomas, vice president of Clean Energy Solutions – Customer Solutions at PSE&G, said. “Every project, whether it’s in a home, a business or a public building, helps customers better manage their energy use, frees up resources that can be used on other priorities and creates lasting benefits for communities throughout the state.”
