Stay cool and save water: New Jersey Utilities urge residents to prep for extreme heat wave

As New Jersey braces for a significant heat wave with temperatures forecast to exceed 100°F during the lead-up to the Fourth of July, the New Jersey Utilities Association (NJUA) is calling on residents to prioritize safety and energy conservation.

With the state’s energy grid facing increased demand as homes and businesses crank up air conditioning, NJUA is offering several strategies to keep residents cool while maintaining grid reliability:

  • Optimize Cooling: Raise thermostat settings when it is safe to do so and use ceiling or portable fans to improve circulation.
  • Block the Sun: Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Manage Appliances: Run major appliances—such as dishwashers and dryers—at night when overall energy demand is lower.
  • Reduce Load: Unplug unused electronics and chargers.
  • Personal Care: Take shorter, cooler showers to reduce indoor humidity and heat.

A critical note on drought conditions

The upcoming heat wave arrives as New Jersey remains under a statewide Drought Warning, with conditions ranging from moderate to extreme across the state. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) is urging residents to be mindful of water usage, particularly outdoors:

  • Lawn Care: Limit watering to no more than two days per week.
  • Efficient Irrigation: Utilize drip irrigation or microsprays to reduce waste by 30–50%.
  • Landscape Smart: Opt for native, drought-tolerant plants.
  • Pool Care: Cover pools when not in use to prevent evaporation.
  • Repurpose Water: Use water from dehumidifiers or air conditioning units for irrigation.

“Extreme heat can pose serious risks to public health while driving up electricity demand,” Richard Henning, president and CEO of NJUA said. “New Jersey’s utility companies are working around the clock to provide safe, reliable service, ensuring residents and businesses have the tools they need to manage rising temperatures.”

Residents looking for relief from the heat are encouraged to find their nearest cooling center. For a comprehensive, interactive map of locations, visit the Heat Hub of NJ. You can also dial 2-1-1 or visit NJ 2-1-1 for assistance in finding designated cooling facilities.
