The Arc of New Jersey names longtime Céline Fortin as new executive director

North Brunswick-based Arc of New Jersey, the state’s leading advocacy organization for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), on Wednesday announced the appointment of Céline Fortin as its new executive director. Fortin, who has served the organization for over 30 years, succeeds previous executive Director Tom Baffuto, who retired earlier this year.

Fortin steps into the role after most recently serving as associate executive director. Her extensive career includes more than 40 years of service to the IDD and mental health communities, having first joined The Arc of New Jersey as a research assistant in 1990. She is a Licensed Social Worker (L.S.W.) with a Masters of Social Work (M.S.W.) from Rutgers University.

“I am honored and humbled to serve as the next Executive Director of The Arc of New Jersey,” Fortin said. “I was privileged to have served alongside Tom Baffuto for more than 25 years and I am inheriting a mantle shaped by excellence. I’m eager to continue to build on his legacy and provide new ideas and a vision for The Arc of New Jersey to fuel our growth and drive our mission forward as we effect change, shape policy and drive inclusion for those with disabilities.”

Guiding The Arc’s advocacy mission

In her new capacity, Fortin will be responsible for working with government agencies, stakeholders, the Board, and 20 Local Chapters across the state to advance the organization’s mission. For over 75 years, The Arc of New Jersey has championed IDD inclusion through a range of programs, including:

  • Children’s, Legal, and Health Care Advocacy
  • Governmental Affairs
  • Supported Employment
  • Information and Referral Services

The organization’s leadership praised Fortin’s experience and commitment to advocacy.

“There is no one more qualified than Céline to guide The Arc of New Jersey forward as we leverage our strengths and dial up the impact we’re having across the state,” Lauren Zalepka, board president, The Arc of New Jersey said. “Her passion for advocacy is unmatched and the experience she brings to the table… is exactly what’s needed as we focus on the future.”

The Board also extended its thanks to Michael Prendergast for his leadership while serving as Interim Executive Director during the transition period.
