New Jersey City University (NJCU) Galleries is set to premiere “HOME HERE,” a groundbreaking exhibition featuring 11 women identifying artists from the Jersey City community. Opening on Feb. 5, the installation promises to turn the Visual Arts Building Gallery into a living dialogue of memory, history, and interconnectedness.
Curated by NJCU alumna Lucy Rovetto (BFA ’91), “HOME HERE” departs from traditional gallery layouts. Instead of isolated pieces, the site-specific installation features a continuous, flowing design where individual works overlap and interact. This boundary-less approach is intended to mirror the complex themes of shared history and collective memory.
The exhibition bridges the gap between the past and present by featuring contemporary local voices alongside the historic legacy of Ward Mount. A titan in the Jersey City art scene, Mount was a painter, sculptor, and former chair of the NJCU Art Department during the 1940s. Her contributions will be brought to life through the research of historian Martin Pierce.
The exhibition showcases a diverse group of contemporary artists, each contributing a unique perspective to the Jersey City narrative:
- Laia Cabrera
- Nicole DeMaio
- Isabelle Duverger
- Jaz Graf
- Katelyn Halpern
- Jin Jung
- Pat Lay
- Tina Maneca
- Cheryl R. Riley
- Jennifer Roberts
The public is invited to attend an opening reception on February 5 from 4–7 p.m., providing an opportunity to engage with the artists and the curator.
