In a milestone for one of New Jersey’s most prominent family-owned businesses, Schuman Cheese on Monday officially announced the advancement of its fourth-generation leadership team. The Fairfield-headquartered specialty food leader, a staple of the Garden State’s manufacturing and distribution landscape for over 80 years, is positioning itself for a new chapter of international scale and category innovation.
The transition is led by the appointment of Allison Schuman as chief executive officer. She succeeds Neal Schuman, who will transition to the role of chairman, providing strategic oversight after years of steering the company’s massive domestic and import growth.
The leadership evolution is designed as a “deliberate continuity” rather than a disruption, distributing key pillars of the global enterprise among three members of the Schuman family:
-
Allison Schuman (CEO): Formerly the chief revenue officer, Allison takes the helm after years of guiding the company’s commercial strategy. Her focus remains on balancing the brand’s 81-year heritage with the governance needed for modern scale.
-
Ian Schuman (president of global): Ian will spearhead the company’s international footprint, overseeing all import and export operations. His role is critical to maintaining the multi-generational relationships Schuman Cheese holds with European and global producers.
-
Keith Schuman (strategic initiatives & Banyan Seed): Keith will continue to oversee domestic production, including the company’s plant-based initiatives and Lake Country Dairy operations. Additionally, he will lead Banyan Seed, the Schuman family office designed to fund innovation-driven projects.
Founded in 1945, Schuman Cheese has evolved from a traditional importer into a powerhouse of specialty cheese craftsmanship and “blue-chip” partnerships. From its Fairfield base, the company has become a national leader in hard Italian cheeses and a pioneer in the emerging plant-based dairy sector.
“This transition is about honoring the foundation that has carried us for more than eight decades while building the leadership structure and governance needed for the future,” Allison Schuman said. “Our strength has always been our unity as a family.”
Beyond its leadership transition, Schuman Cheese is rapidly expanding its market dominance through two major strategic alliances. In January 2026, the company became the exclusive U.S. supplier for Wyke Farms, the United Kingdom’s largest independent cheese producer, granting Schuman the sole rights to distribute heritage British cheddars and Ivy’s Reserve butter across America. Simultaneously, Schuman has pivoted toward the high-growth plant-based sector by forming GPV Foods, a joint venture with GOOD PLANeT Foods that unites Schuman’s “Vevan” dairy-free brand with GOOD PLANeT’s extensive retail footprint.
