Moorestown Ecumenical Neighborhood Development, Inc. (MEND) has announced the appointment of Janet Thomas as the new chair of its Board of Trustees. A board member since 2021, Thomas steps into the leadership role at a pivotal time for the nonprofit as it seeks to expand its footprint of affordable housing across South Jersey.
The appointment is a “full-circle” moment for the organization: Thomas is the daughter of the late Warren Sawyer, one of MEND’s original founding members who helped establish the nonprofit in the late 1960s.
For Thomas, the mission of providing safe, quality homes is more than a professional responsibility—it is a family calling. Her father’s vision was built on the belief that a stable home is the essential foundation for a better life; a philosophy Thomas intends to champion during her tenure.
“My father believed that a safe, affordable home is the foundation for a better life and I share that belief,” Thomas said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to carry forward his legacy and to work alongside MEND’s leadership to expand access to safe, quality homes for families and individuals in our communities.”
Under the leadership of President and CEO Eileen Wirth, MEND has focused on creating opportunities for residents to thrive beyond just providing a roof over their heads. Wirth noted that Thomas’ professional background and personal empathy make her the ideal person to guide the board.
“Janet’s belief that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and kindness reflects the root of our mission,” Wirth said.
Founded in 1969, MEND is a faith-based nonprofit dedicated to providing safe and affordable housing for low- and moderate-income families, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.
