Target hits the bullseye in West Orange: 150,000-SF store anchors major plaza redevelopment

The long-awaited retail transformation of West Orange Plaza reached a definitive milestone this weekend as Target officially opened its doors to the public.

The massive 150,000-square-foot facility at 235 Prospect Avenue celebrated its grand opening on March 29. As the retailer’s 55th location in the Garden State, the store represents a cornerstone of an ongoing multimillion-dollar redevelopment project aimed at revitalizing one of Essex County’s most prominent shopping hubs.

For local residents, the opening signifies more than just a new place to shop; it is the centerpiece of a strategic “merchandising evolution” led by Levin Management Corp. (LMC).

“Bringing Target to West Orange Plaza marks an exciting step in the property’s evolution,” Sidney Singer, vice president of leasing for LMC said. “This addition introduces one of the nation’s best-known retailers to the center and reinforces West Orange Plaza’s strength as a retail destination.”

The redevelopment isn’t stopping with Target. LMC confirmed it has secured several new leases as part of its outparcel development program, including:

  • VIO Med Spa
  • Quickway Japanese Hibachi
  • Club Pilates
  • Namkeen Hot Chicken Joint

The new Target is expected to be a significant economic driver for the township, bringing approximately 280 new jobs to the area. Beyond employment, the store is designed for modern “omnichannel” shopping, offering:

  • Full Digital Integration: Drive Up, Order Pickup, and same-day delivery via Target Circle 360.
  • In-Store Amenities: A CVS Pharmacy, Starbucks cafe, and Target Optical.
  • Extended Hours: Open daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. to accommodate commuting schedules.

Situated at the high-traffic intersection of Eagle Rock and Prospect avenues—just off I-280—the 298,000-square-foot plaza is already anchored by Whole Foods. The addition of Target rounds out a diverse tenant mix that includes Chipotle, Jersey Mike’s, and Dogtopia.

Max Gagneon, LMC’s vice president of construction, noted that the arrival of Target is a “milestone within the broader redevelopment,” which includes new buildings, expanded outparcel space, and significant site upgrades designed to enhance the consumer experience.
