La Fortaleza gearing up to become World Cup hub in Carlstadt

Ortega and Madrigal preparing for global fans, big games and a nonstop party atmosphere in shadow of MetLife Stadium

Great food.

Incredible decor.

Awesome atmosphere.

Mexican-American proprietors who are passionate about the sport — and throwing parties.

La Fortaleza in Carlstadt already has everything it needs to be the perfect place to gather for 2026 FIFA World Cup matches.

One of five locations led by the husband-and-wife team of Arturo Ortega and Valery Madrigal, La Fortaleza has been preparing for the event since the day it was announced that New Jersey would host the final, making it a focal point of the tournament.

For Ortega, the goal is simple: turn an already high-energy restaurant into the World Cup gathering spot — for locals, hotel guests and fans from all over the world.

“We are ready,” Ortega said. “Every game will be on the big screen and every TV we have here.

“It will be a non-stop party.”

You see the soccer theme from the moment you step into La Fortaleza.

Life-like cutouts of Leo Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pelé and Hugo Sánchez surround the foosball table. There is an enclosed sculpture of Pelé’s famous feet. There are flags from numerous countries.

Of course, being festive has always been part of the business model at La Fortaleza.

Getting newcomers through the door — international tourists and locals looking for a hot spot — is key to fully taking advantage of the event, which starts June 13 in Mexico City and ends July 19 at MetLife Stadium, a mile or two from the restaurant.

Ortega said he’s ready.

Promotion won’t just be to a few social posts. There is a broader marketing plan.

Ortega said La Fortaleza is working its connections in the neighborhood — especially with nearby hotels — to reach the wave of visitors.

“We are going around to local hotels,” he said. “We already have a relationship with them, so we are taking flyers, talking to staff in the lobbies, and building connections with their guests.”

Alongside that on-the-ground approach, he’s banking on the way people search in 2026.

Between hotel referrals, flyers and search traffic, the strategy is to be the obvious answer when someone in the Meadowlands area types in “where to watch the World Cup.”

And while La Fortaleza’s roots are proudly Mexican, the couple is looking beyond a single fan base. Ortega said that visually and culturally, the space is being designed to feel welcoming to fans from all over.

“It’s not only Mexico — it’s Brazil, USA, Uruguay, Argentina — we’re trying to make everyone welcome,” he said.

Inside, the energy and decor are already there. The next step — if the town approves — is to bring the World Cup out into the open, taking advantage of the front space and large parking lot in the back.

They want to add a small soccer pitch, play music, serve food, put up a large-screen television — and create an outdoor fan experience.

Ortega is even working to add additional parking next door, saying the best way to grow the game is to experience it together.

Whether he will be able to, remains to be seen.

“They haven’t said ‘No,’ but they haven’t said, ‘Yes,’” he said.

The town, he said, is still trying to finalize its broader plan.

Ortega and Madrigal aren’t waiting. They are prepared to host the entire party inside a restaurant that seats 350.

Can’t get tickets to a match? No worries, Ortega said.

La Fortaleza is determined to create the next best thing, right next door.

“We’re going to make this World Cup awesome for New Jersey,” he said.
