Finally here: World Cup starts today – here are great places to experience the moment

From watch parties (La Fortaleza, 1776, The Yard) to fan festivals (Flag Cities, Jersey Fan Hub, American Dream), we’ve got last-minute ideas from where to go to take in the event

The first match of the World Cup is this afternoon – in Mexico City.

The first match involving the U.S. is Friday night – in Southern California.

The first match at MetLife Stadium is Saturday – at 6 p.m.

And those are just three of the seven matches scheduled for the first three days of the event – and just three of the record 104 matches that will be played in the next 39 days.

If you’re still trying to figure out how to experience this global event, don’t worry: We’ve got you covered.

BINJE has written extensively about the event in the past year. Here are just some (of the many) spots to take in the event, based on stories we’ve produced.

WATCH PARTIES

La Fortaleza (Carlstadt)
Located just a mile or so from MetLife Stadium, it may have the best party atmosphere for the matches. The husband-and-wife team of Arturo Ortega and Valery Madrigal may be fans of Mexico, but the location is set up to welcome fans of all nations. (Great food, too).

1776 (Morristown)
Located inside 1776 Morristown on the opposite side of the restaurant, The Suites at ’76 feature six living-room-style suites designed for elevated match-day experiences. Each individual suite includes comfortable sectional sofa seating, high-top tables and chairs, and its own oversized projector screen where guests can watch the matches or interact with Topgolf Swing Suite games.

The Yard (New Brunswick)
How would you like to watch the action on a 350-square-foot screen? You can do that at The Yard at College Avenue in New Brunswick, which serves as the city’s World Cup watch party headquarters, broadcasting every match. Grab a chair and come over.

FAN FESTIVALS

Flag Cities (North Jersey)
Goya Presents Flag Cities events, to be held in seven areas throughout North Jersey (including Newark and Jersey City), will feature live entertainment, DJs, giant LED screens broadcasting World Cup matches, food trucks and beverage vendors, beer gardens, kids’ soccer zones, shopping vendors, cultural activations and immersive fan programming celebrating participating nations.

Jersey Fan Hub (Harrison)
Sponsored by the NYNJ Host Committee, The Jersey Fan Hub at Sports Illustrated Stadium will be open for eight days during the group stage and eight days during the knockout and feature real-time broadcasts (on a 60-foot screen), live entertainment, interactive fan activations and sponsorship integrations.

Dream Fan Fest (East Rutherford)
Running for the full duration of the 39-day tournament, the mega-fest will feature official match viewing parties, celebrity appearances, live entertainment, brand activations and youth clinics. Marquee match broadcasts and daily events will take center stage at The Rink @ The Arena, offering fans a massive, climate-controlled festival environment.

La Plaza de Futbol (American Dream)
The open market, sponsored by the N.J. Small Business Growth Council, in partnership with American Dream, aims to give approximately 1,000 small businesses a chance to showcase their products and services to World Cup visitors.
