Valley’s Urologic Oncology Center enhances bladder cancer detection with new ‘Blue Light’ technology

The Urologic Oncology Center at The Valley Hospital has announced the adoption of Blue Light Cystoscopy with Cysview®, a sophisticated imaging technique designed to significantly improve the detection and treatment of bladder cancer.

A standard cystoscopy involves using a thin, camera-equipped scope to examine the bladder for abnormalities. The new blue light technique builds on this process by utilizing a specialized imaging dye.

“The Cysview® medication is absorbed by cancer cells, making them glow bright pink when exposed to the blue light,” Dr. David Ahlborn, a urologist at the center, explained. “During the cystoscopy, the urologist switches between white and blue light to perform a visual exam of the bladder, and the glowing cancer cells become easier to spot and remove.”

This added contrast allows surgeons to identify tumors—including some that might be difficult to visualize under standard white light—with greater precision.

The implementation of this technology offers several clinical advantages, including:

  • Precision Diagnostics: Enhanced ability to determine the aggressiveness and stage of cancerous cells.
  • Efficiency: The procedure is performed as a same-day surgery under anesthesia.
  • Optimized Outcomes: Increased potential for less invasive treatment and a quicker recovery, allowing patients to return to daily activities sooner.

Because bladder cancer is known for a high rate of recurrence, patients often require lifelong monitoring. Ahlborn noted that access to high-definition imaging is vital for this ongoing care.

To support patients through the diagnostic and surveillance process, Valley’s urologic oncology nurse navigators coordinate the procedure and streamline communication between patients and their specialized cancer care teams.

The Blue Light Cystoscopy is now available for patients with suspected low-, intermediate-, or high-risk bladder cancer, as well as those with complex medical histories.
