Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center has officially become the first hospital in New Jersey to implement the GE HealthCare StarGuide SPECT/CT system, a breakthrough imaging technology designed to enhance the precision and speed of tumor detection.
The StarGuide system represents a major leap forward in nuclear medicine. By utilizing advanced 3D scanning capabilities, the system provides clinicians with high-resolution images that accurately pinpoint the size, shape, and exact location of lesions within the body.
A leap forward in precision medicine
For patients, the StarGuide system offers a significantly improved experience. The technology’s digital detectors can be positioned as close to the patient’s body as possible from multiple angles, resulting in exceptional image quality while drastically reducing the time a patient must remain still on the scanning table.
“The StarGuide system offers us more than just a step up in imaging—it is a completely new tool that now allows us to guide decision-making and support procedures we couldn’t do before,” Dr. James Cassuto, associate system medical director of Nuclear Medicine for Atlantic Medical Group and section chief of Nuclear Medicine at Overlook Medical Center, said.
Advancing the field of theranostics
A key capability of the StarGuide system is its role in “theranostics,” an emerging and highly personalized approach to cancer treatment. Theranostics combines diagnostic imaging with targeted radionuclide therapy, allowing physicians to first visualize a tumor using a radioactive tracer and then deliver precise, cell-damaging radiation to the identified cancer cells.
By using the same molecular targets for both diagnostics and therapy, this approach helps optimize treatment monitoring and minimizes the impact on surrounding healthy tissue. Beyond cancer care, the StarGuide system will assist Atlantic Health physicians in clinical decision-making across pulmonology—including asthma and cystic fibrosis care—and neurology.
About nuclear medicine and Atlantic Health
Nuclear medicine is a specialized field of diagnostic imaging that uses radioactive tracers to identify and track diseases at the molecular level. The precision offered by the StarGuide system is vital for early disease detection and for monitoring how patients respond to their personalized treatment plans.
