The American Mexican Chamber of Commerce issued the following statement after President Donald Trump announced the U.S. would impose a 30% tariff on all Mexican imports into the U.S.
Trump said the tariff threat was in response to Mexico not doing enough to stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.
“We express our deepest concern and energetic rejection of the letter issued by the White House on July 11, 2025, which announces the imposition of 30% tariffs on all Mexican products exported to the United States as of August 1, 2025.
“This unilateral and punitive measure threatens to destabilize one of the most important and solid trade relations on the continent. In 2024 alone, bilateral trade between Mexico and the U.S. exceeded $860 billion, positioning Mexico as the number one trading partner of the United States.
“The imposition of these tariffs will have a profound impact on various sectors of the economy.
“Firstly, it will adversely affect thousands of American and Mexican American companies that rely on Mexican inputs and products.
“Secondly, it will negatively impact millions of jobs on both sides of the border.
“Thirdly, it will severely disrupt the value chains of strategic sectors, including automotive, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing.
“Fourthly, it will diminish North America’s competitiveness in comparison to China and other emerging economies.”
The AMRCC issued an urgent call for unity.
“We issue an urgent call to business leaders, legislators, governors, and fair-trade advocates in both countries to express their opposition to this measure. The shared prosperity of our nations cannot be compromised by unilateral pressures or electoral decisions.
“The future of North America lies in cooperation, not confrontation.”
