Audible’s ‘The Pillars’ rises in Newark, sparking a new model for urban investment

A new chapter in Newark’s revitalization is set to begin on Oct. 15 with the grand opening of “The Pillars,” a visionary retail hub developed by Audible. Located at 33 Washington Street in the city’s vibrant Arts and Education District, The Pillars is more than just a new commercial space—it represents an innovative model for corporate engagement and investment in urban communities.

Audible, the leading provider of premium audio storytelling, has transformed the 15,000-square-foot ground floor of a prominent modernist building, originally designed by architect Welton Becket. The renovation has created a dynamic new space complete with Audible listening booths and four distinct retail spaces, designed to foster community and support local entrepreneurs.

The first three tenants—Tansy (a home goods and plant store), Pooka Pure & Simple (a handcrafted bath and body products brand), and HealHaus (a wellness destination with a café)—were selected for their unique retail concepts and commitment to community. A fourth food and beverage tenant is set to be announced, with an opening planned for 2026.

According to Audible CEO Bob Carrigan, “The Pillars represents a new paradigm for corporate investment in our headquarters city.” The company is providing financial support to the tenants through its Business Attraction Program, a key initiative that offers funding, mentorship, and networking to retail and startup founders who have historically faced barriers to access. “By transforming physical spaces and directly supporting local businesses…we’re building an ecosystem that sustains entrepreneurship, drives foot traffic, and celebrates community,” Carrigan added.

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka echoed this sentiment, praising the project as “the epitome of the high-caliber innovation and community-focused development that drives Newark forward.” He emphasized how investing in new neighborhood amenities and creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs strengthens the fabric of the entire city.

Each of the initial tenants expressed their excitement about being part of the project. Shawna Christian, founder of Tansy, noted her newest location will be “more than a retail space—it will be a platform for creativity and community connection.” Dawn Fitch, bringing her Pooka Pure & Simple brand back to her hometown of Newark, called the new space an “immersive vision for retail and creativity,” while Darian Hall of HealHaus said Newark’s “vibrant community and rich cultural heritage make it the perfect home for our next chapter.”

The opening of The Pillars builds on Audible’s longstanding commitment to Newark. The company’s neighborhood strategy includes the restoration of the historic Innovation Cathedral in 2019 and ongoing public events and programming. Through initiatives like the Business Attraction Program and the Newark Artist Collaboration, Audible generates nearly two billion dollars annually in economic impact in the city, helping to create a more equitable and prosperous future for the community.
