BioNJ, the powerhouse association representing New Jersey’s life sciences industry, has officially joined the New Jersey Innovation Hub, Powered by Portal (NJIH), as a foundational member.
The move signifies a deepening partnership between the state’s primary advocacy group and the high-tech infrastructure at the HELIX (Health and Life Science Exchange) in New Brunswick, reinforcing New Jersey’s standing as a global leader in biopharmaceutical innovation.
As a foundational member, BioNJ will serve as a vital link within the NJIH ecosystem, facilitating collaboration between early-stage startups, global biopharma giants, academic researchers and venture capitalists.
The partnership is designed to offer a “full-spectrum” support system:
- Infrastructure: Startups gain access to specialized wet labs and office space via Portal Innovations’ integrated platform.
- Connectivity: BioNJ will maintain a new presence in New Brunswick alongside its Trenton headquarters, hosting committee meetings and industry convenings at the HELIX to foster a sense of community.
- Resources: All Portal member companies will now have access to BioNJ’s extensive benefits, including advocacy, talent resources, and value-driven purchasing programs.
“Joining the New Jersey Innovation Hub reflects BioNJ’s commitment to supporting innovation from discovery through commercialization,” Debbie Hart, president and CEO of BioNJ said. “We are excited to help entrepreneurs build and scale companies in New Jersey… and ultimately bring new innovations to Patients.”
The inclusion of BioNJ—an organization representing over 400 research-based entities—is seen as a major win for the New Brunswick hub. By aligning industry leadership with venture creation infrastructure, the partnership aims to accelerate the translation of laboratory breakthroughs into life-saving therapies.
John Flavin, CEO of Portal Innovations, noted that BioNJ’s participation is a “meaningful endorsement” of the local ecosystem. “Their leadership will help deepen connections and ultimately accelerate company formation in the State,” Flavin said.
The New Jersey Innovation Hub, Powered by Portal, is currently on track to launch in July.
The initiative follows BioNJ’s long-standing mission—guided by the mantra “Because Patients Can’t Wait®”—to ensure that New Jersey remains a fertile ground for medical breakthroughs. By planting a flag at the HELIX, BioNJ ensures that the next generation of biotech entrepreneurs has direct access to the policy advocates and industry veterans needed to navigate the complex journey from “bench to bedside.”
