Locally owned: Basking Ridge event shows how communities can tap into World Cup economic boom

The Battle of Basking Ridge turned two visiting World Cup teams into weekend-long boost for Main Street — exactly what Sherrill’s $5 million grant program was designed to do

Brazil and Morocco’s national teams have been staying and practicing near Basking Ridge for the World Cup. The town could have let that happen quietly in the background.

Instead, it turned the moment into a test case for the entire premise behind Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s $5 million FIFA World Cup Community Initiative Grant Program — that international soccer excitement only matters to a local economy if it actually gets people through the door of a local business.

Basking Ridge passed the test.

The Battle of Basking Ridge, held this past weekend, brought thousands of residents and regional visitors into Somerset County for a day built around culture and entertainment.

In addition to Dutch freestylers, Brazilian samba dancers and Moroccan musicians, there was a sticker-trading event for kids and a meet-and-greet with U.S. Women’s Soccer local legend Christie Pearce Rampone, who signed autographs and let local kids hold her Olympic and FIFA Women’s World Cup medals.

But the entertainment was never really the point.

The goal was getting all those people to actually spend money nearby — which is precisely what Choose New Jersey, which administers the grant, designed the funding to do.

Bernards Township Mayor Ana Duarte McCarthy said the event let the town capture the moment.

“The Battle of Basking Ridge enabled Bernards Township to capture the energy of having two World Cup teams, Brazil and Morocco, practicing and staying in our town, with a celebration of culture, community, and our local businesses,” she said. “We are in the midst of a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

That’s why the organizers didn’t just plan a festival; they built infrastructure around it.

A map was created highlighting which local businesses were open during the festivities.

Merchants were recruited into the Welcome World Rewards Program: Hills of Herat, Jersey Girl Chocolate, O’Bagel, Copper Kettle, The Laundry Basket, Greens Natural Foods, Sneaker Factory, and Blue Café all participated — several extending hours, rolling out special menu items and decorating storefronts for the occasion.

Committeewoman Jennifer Asay said that focus was intentional from the start.

“From the beginning, our goal was to create a community-first event that put residents, local businesses, and visitors at the center of the experience,” she said. “Thanks to the support of the Choose New Jersey grant, we were able to celebrate the FIFA World Cup while showcasing local talent, encouraging visitors to explore downtown Basking Ridge, and creating opportunities for our business community to participate.”

The day built toward a community watch party for the Brazil-Morocco match itself — the natural cap to a weekend designed around the idea that you don’t need a ticket to the match to feel like part of it.

The timing helped, too.

The event coincided with the Summer Blast Off 2026 Youth Soccer Tournament, organized by FC Berna-Legacy, which brought 2,500 families from Connecticut, New York and across New Jersey into the area. Bernards Township coordinated with tournament organizers to funnel those families into the festivities as well.

Asay was thrilled.

“This was a unique opportunity for Basking Ridge, and we worked hard to make the most of it,” she said.
