Origin
Founded in 1976 as Shelter Our Sisters, Center for Hope & Safety was created to give Bergen County survivors of domestic violence a path from fear and isolation to safety and hope. Built on the belief that every person deserves to live free from abuse, the nonprofit empowers survivors and their children with support, healing, and new beginnings.
Mission/vision
Center for Hope & Safety’s mission is to assist Bergen County survivors of domestic violence (emotional, economic, sexual and physical) by providing emergency and transitional housing, emotional support and a full continuum of services focused on safety, empowerment and self-sufficiency. Guided by the belief that every person has the right to live free from violence and fear, the agency works to eliminate domestic violence through direct services, education and community partnerships.
Key programs
- 24-Hour Hotline (201-944-9600): The emergency hotline is in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Callers receive immediate crisis intervention, counseling and referrals.

A variety of services are provided: individual and group counseling; case management services; legal advocacy, advice, counsel and court representation; community resource referrals; job and housing searches.
- Economic Empowerment Program: Helps survivors build financial independence through career counseling, job development and housing support. Services include skills training, job search assistance, budgeting credit counseling, English as a Second Language and High School Equivalency exam preparation and help securing safe, affordable housing to empower individuals to rebuild stability and self-sufficiency.
