Dale Caldwell certainly is an educator.
The current president of Centenary University also served as the head of the Rothman Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Fairleigh Dickinson University from 2018-23.
Prior to that, he ran charter schools in Asbury Park and Trenton. In fact, he was New Jersey’s Charter School Administrator of the Year in 2015.
In addition, he served on the New Brunswick Board of Education for 26 years (leaving in 2024) and spent nearly 25 years as a member of the Educational Services Commission of New Jersey, which administers shared services agreements for school districts in Middlesex, Mercer, Somerset and Union counties.
And Caldwell, 65, graduated from Princeton, earned an MBA from the Wharton School at Penn and earned a doctorate in Education Administration from Seton Hall.
Education, however, likely is just one of the reasons why Caldwell was selected to be the Lt. Governor nominee of the Democratic ticket led by Mikie Sherrill, as first reported by the New Jersey Globe.
Caldwell also has a long history of service to the state.
In 1999, he became the first executive director of the Newark Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to economic development that comprises a consortium of business and civic leaders. He also has served as chairman of the New Brunswick Housing Authority — and as an assistant commissioner of the N.J. Department of Community Affairs under Gov. Jim McGreevey.
In the private sector, Caldwell was employed by Deloitte Consulting, where he specialized in public sector health care for nearly a decade.
Caldwell also has been active in the sports arena.
In 2006, he became the president and CEO of the United States Tennis Association – the first Black person to hold that post — and is a founder of the Black Tennis Hall of Fame.
