In a move described by its founders as an “unwavering commitment to queer and trans liberation,” the formation of Q Law NJ, Inc. (“Q Law”), New Jersey’s independent LGBTQ+ affinity bar association, has been officially announced. The launch fills a critical gap, as New Jersey had previously remained one of the few states in the U.S. without an independent LGBTQ+ bar association.
The organization’s board of directors emphasized that an independent voice for LGBTQ+ legal professionals is needed now more than ever, particularly in the face of relentless attacks on the community.
The founders note that while LGBTQ+ legal professionals in New Jersey have long pushed for change and made meaningful strides, the work is far from complete. They point to recent hostilities targeting the trans community nationally and within New Jersey as a key motivator for organizing.
“From local boards of education to state office seekers, the attacks on trans people nationally and in New Jersey have been relentless, demoralizing, and with significant consequence,” the announcement stated.
In response to this reality, Q Law members state they will assert their rights to equality under the law, freedom from discrimination, and autonomy over their lives. They stress that organized collective action is a necessary means of survival.
Q Law is now opening its membership to all legal professionals, including law professors, paralegals, law students, and others, who align with the organization’s Mission and Core Principles. Membership is inclusive and open regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or residency, reflecting an aspiration to include a wide array of lived experiences within the diverse LGBTQ+ community.
The association also aims to cultivate the next generation of leaders. “As current leaders throughout New Jersey, we also believe in developing and encouraging a future class of professionals who will make their own advancements,” the board stated.
The organization’s current leadership includes Derek J. Demeri as President and Liz Pudel as Vice President.
Concluding their announcement, the Board expressed their commitment to building a better New Jersey: “Rather than accept the present reality and the failures of a status quo that brought us to this moment, we can build the New Jersey we wish to live in. With bravery and courage, that work can carry on with Q Law.”
