Shore Medical Center CEO David Hughes is reaching out to the more than 17,000 Spirit Airlines employees who suddenly lost their jobs this weekend when the carrier shut down with an interesting offer: Consider joining the Shore team.
At first glance, it may seem like an unusual ask: How does working on a plane translate to working in a hospital?
Hughes sees a connection: The hallmark of both sectors is working with people.
“We’re always looking for people who care about others and want to make a difference,” he said. “Many of these employees bring valuable experience in service, teamwork, and high-responsibility roles — skills that translate well in a health care setting.”
More than that, Hughes sees this as a chance for Shore Medical Center to be a community supporter in a time of need. He knows many Spirit Airline employees working at Atlantic City International Airport live in or near Somers Point, where Shore Medical Center is located.
“We know how important Spirit has been to Atlantic City and this region, and this is difficult news for many hardworking people,” he said. “Moments like this go beyond business — they affect people’s lives in very real ways, and we want employees to know they are valued and have support close to home.
“We’d welcome the opportunity to connect.”
Hughes is encouraging displaced Spirit workers to explore a variety of open positions across multiple departments. The organization offers competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and a mission-driven environment focused on patient care and community service, he said.
Shore Medical Center encourages interested candidates to learn more about current openings and apply on its website or contact the human resources department at (609) 653-3722 or email [email protected].
Hughes said Shore Medical Center remains committed to supporting members of the community during this transition and encourages those affected to reach out, explore available opportunities, and consider continuing their careers in a mission-driven health care environment.
He also offered a note of thanks for the work those employees have done in the past. Hughes said he was a frequent customer.
“On behalf of everyone at Shore Medical Center, and as a loyal customer, I want to thank Spirit Airlines employees for the dedication and care you’ve shown travelers over the years,” he said.
“While we will truly miss the presence and service of Spirit Airlines, Shore Medical Center stands ready to support those affected.”
