Wakefern Food Corp., the Keasbey-based retailer-owned cooperative, announced the promotion of industry veteran Chris Ruane to director of Own Brands. The move signals a major strategic push for Wakefern as it seeks to scale its private-label portfolio and drive innovation across its nearly 360 retail locations.
In his new capacity, Ruane will report directly to Darren Caudill, chief sales officer. He is tasked with steering the strategy for Wakefern’s popular private labels—including Bowl & Basket, Wholesome Pantry and Paperbird—with a focus on product development, supplier relationships, and high-value assortments.
Ruane is a 20-year veteran of the wholesale and retail food industry, with a career defined by high-volume procurement and category management. Most recently, he served as procurement manager of Dairy at Wakefern, where he managed a department generating over $2 billion in annual retail sales.
His tenure at the Keasbey-headquartered cooperative has spanned multiple critical divisions, including Frozen Foods, Health & Beauty, and Grocery.
“Chris’s deep industry expertise, strong leadership and commitment to value make him the right person to lead our Own Brands team,” Caudill said. “As we continue to grow our portfolio and support our retail members, Chris will play an important role in advancing innovation and delivering high-quality products our customers trust.”
Wakefern’s “Own Brands” division has become a cornerstone of its competitive strategy in the Northeast, particularly as consumers increasingly look for premium quality at a lower price point. Ruane’s background in cost management and vendor coordination is expected to be a primary asset as the company looks to:
- Optimize Assortment: Tailoring products to meet shifting consumer health and lifestyle trends.
- Strengthen Partnerships: Leveraging manufacturer relationships to ensure supply chain stability.
- Enhance Product Flow: Utilizing his experience as a Procurement Analyst to maintain efficiency across 400+ retail locations.
As a cooperative, Wakefern serves as the logistics and merchandising arm for ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, and other banners. Ruane’s promotion reinforces the company’s commitment to internal talent development and its role as a massive economic driver for the New Jersey and New York metropolitan regions.
“Chris will lead strategy for Wakefern’s Own Brands portfolio, focusing on advancing product innovation and strengthening supplier partnerships,” the company stated in its announcement.
