10 things about … trade with Mexico

The AMRCC, which just celebrated its first anniversary, was created to expand trade between the U.S. and Mexico and drive the strategic growth that will shape markets and strengthen communities.

Here are 10 things about trade between the two countries, between Mexico and the region and Mexico and New Jersey:

10. The total economic footprint between those of Mexico origin and New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut is $91 billion — with a $52B contribution to the GDP and $39B spend in consumer products;

9. Mexicans in New Jersey contributed $11.5 billion toward the GDP and $8.4 billion in consumer spending;

8. Latinos represented $336 billon in consumer spending in the region;

7. Mexico exported $43.8B in agriculture to the United States — good for 20.7% of this country’s agricultural imports;

6. Mexico is responsible for 69% of all fresh vegetables and 51% of all fresh fruit imported into the U.S. economy.

5. Stunningly, more than 90% of all avocados imported to the U.S. came from Mexico;

4. The Port of New Jersey handles $20.3 billion in imports from Mexico, including $11.4 billion in fruit and nuts and $8.9B in vegetables;

3. There are 19,600 Mexican-owned businesses in New Jersey;

2. Mexican-owned business can be found in many sectors, including manufacturing, construction and logistics;

1. 80% of all wages earned by Mexicans in the U.S. stays in the U.S.
