Origin
Autism New Jersey was founded in 1965 by a group of parents who were frustrated by a lack of support for their children with developmental disabilities. They formed support groups throughout New Jersey, lobbied for funding for special education services and established a help line that still supports parents today.
Mission/vision
Autism New Jersey drives statewide change and creates connections through compassionate support, expert guidance and a deep commitment to an autism-friendly New Jersey. Its vision is to create a New Jersey where people with autism thrive in their daily lives within fully supportive communities.
It is a valued resource for the 242,000 individuals in the state with autism, their families and professionals who provide services throughout the lifespan.
Key programs
- 800.4.AUTISM help line: It provides free and confidential support, information, referrals and help navigating services.
- Law enforcement initiative: It promotes adoption of autism-friendly practices with police across the state. The program helps enhance communication and safety during interactions between law enforcement officers and individuals with autism.
- Advancing health care initiative: It aims to improve access to medical care, hospital experiences and care coordination, while educating staff on autism-friendly practices.
Biggest event/fundraiser
The organization just held its 43rd Annual Conference, which drew a record 1,500 parents, teachers, psychologists, behavior analysts and other service providers to Atlantic City.
Supporters/donors
Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, Greenwich Autism Alliance and the New Jersey State Bar Foundation, to name a few.
One more thing
For decades, Autism New Jersey has been a driving force behind substantial policy change, working with legislators and state agencies to establish standards for autism treatment professionals, coverage of autism treatment for children who rely on Medicaid and so much more.
