Valley Health System announces use of NanoKnife® System for prostate cancer treatment

Valley Health System has performed prostate cancer treatment using the NanoKnife® System for the first time.

Valley is also the first hospital in Bergen County to use the NanoKnife® System to treat prostate cancer.

Unlike traditional treatments that remove or treat the entire prostate gland, the NanoKnife® System allows doctors to target cancer that is confined to one or a few small areas, preserving healthy tissue and reducing the risk of complications such as incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

The NanoKnife® System is a minimally invasive form of focal therapy that uses irreversible electroporation — electrical pulses that disrupt cancer cells — while limiting damage to surrounding tissue.

Nick Liu, medical director of urology at Valley Health System, said the approach may offer an alternative for some patients whose cancer is detected early.

“Prostate cancer is the only cancer that is currently treated by removing the entire organ, which may not be necessary if the cancer is detected early,” Liu said. “This treatment offers men a less invasive option for managing prostate cancer.”
