PowerLutions Solar powers up AvalonBay’s Boonton community with new 747-kW rooftop installation

PowerLutions Solar has officially announced the completion of a complex, multi-interconnection rooftop solar project at AvalonBay’s residential community in Boonton. Developed in partnership with RevEnergy Ventures and AvalonBay Communities, the newly minted 747 kW DC system brings a major boost of on-site clean energy to the property.

The system is designed to offset a massive chunk of the community’s common-area electricity use. In its very first year, the installation generated approximately 821,000 kWh hich is roughly equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 79 homes. Over its operating lifespan, the project is projected to offset about 300 metric tons of CO2 emissions every year.

The Boonton installation was no simple plug-and-play job. The system features 13 separate interconnections spread across multiple roofs. To maximize safety, reliability, and module-level performance, the engineering team utilized Talesun modules paired with Enphase microinverters.

By utilizing detailed load mapping and a staged commissioning process, the partners managed to complete the entire upgrade without disrupting residents—while also avoiding a costly utility transformer upgrade.

“With AvalonBay and RevEnergy, we delivered a complex 13-interconnection, 747-kW multi-rooftop system,” Cy Yablonsky, vice president of PowerLutions Solar said. “Through detailed load mapping and staged commissioning, we completed a resident-first solar upgrade and helped avoid a costly transformer upgrade.”

Project highlights & grid integration

The new solar array is fully optimized for modern grid interaction and long-term financial return:

  • Net-Metering Ready: Interconnected with Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) under New Jersey’s net-metering framework.
  • Incentive Aligned: Positioned to actively participate in New Jersey’s state solar incentive programs.
  • Advanced Tracking: Equipped with enterprise-grade monitoring and real-time alerting systems to ensure peak operational efficiency.

For AvalonBay, an equity REIT and S&P 500 member, the project is another step forward in a broader portfolio-wide environmental push.

“AvalonBay’s sustainability platform combines smart development, efficient operations, and innovative strategies to reduce environmental impact across our growing portfolio,” Gautami Palanki, vice president of Sustainability at AvalonBay Communities, Inc. said. “Our emissions targets, clean energy investments, and partnerships with companies like PowerLutions Solar reflect our commitment to delivering resilient, high-performing communities.”

Jeff Bedard, managing partner at REV Energy Ventures, echoed the sentiment, noting how strategic partnerships bridge the gap between corporate responsibility and financial pragmatism. “This project reflects how strategic clean energy partnerships can help real estate owners advance their sustainability goals while delivering meaningful long-term energy savings,” Bedard said.
