Stevens and HCCC launch landmark partnership to bridge STEM education gap

In a move set to transform the academic landscape for New Jersey students, Stevens Institute of Technology and Hudson County Community College (HCCC) have officially joined forces. The partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), aims to dismantle the barriers often faced by community college students seeking to transition into elite four-year STEM programs.

This collaboration marks a pivotal expansion of the Stevens Transfer Student Success Initiative (STSSI). The initiative is fueled by a prestigious grant from the American Talent Initiative (ATI), supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies. By aligning with HCCC, Stevens joins an elite group of only 16 institutions nationwide recognized for actively fostering inclusive STEM environments.

The partnership focuses on four pillars of student success:

  • Clearer Pathways: Mapping HCCC coursework directly to Stevens’ rigorous requirements.
  • Continuous Advising: Providing dedicated guidance from the first day of community college through university graduation.
  • Enhanced Support: Building social and academic safety nets tailored to the unique needs of transfer students.
  • Financial Accessibility: Increasing scholarship opportunities specifically for students from lower-income backgrounds.

For many students at HCCC—a hub for first-generation college seekers in Jersey City—the path to a nationally ranked research university can feel daunting. This agreement seeks to change that narrative.

“At Stevens, we believe that talent is everywhere,” Cindy Chin, vice president for Enrollment Management at Stevens, said. “Our job is to make sure that geography, finances, or circumstance are never barriers to a world-class STEM education.”

HCCC President Christopher Reber echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the critical role of STEM in the modern economy. “This partnership helps ensure students will be guided in developing clear pathways to studies at Stevens… and to attaining rewarding careers that benefit our community.”

The agreement goes beyond just paperwork; it offers tangible benefits for HCCC students looking to transfer, including:

  1. Exclusive Financial Aid: Access to early application scholarships and specialized financial counseling.
  2. Course Transparency: Pre-defined maps that show exactly how credits will transfer, eliminating guesswork.
  3. Collaborative Research: Opportunities to engage in high-level research projects and campus events at Stevens while still enrolled at HCCC.

Prospective students interested in these new pathways are encouraged to visit stevens.edu/transfer for more details on admission and the STSSI program.
