In a major move that bridges the gap between higher education and professional sports, William Paterson University (WP) has officially entered a strategic partnership with Hinchliffe Sports Partners (HSP). The agreement establishes WP as the official university partner for two iconic regional teams: the New Jersey Jackals baseball team and the New York Cosmos soccer team.
The partnership was announced before a packed audience at Hobart Manor, attended by a “who’s who” of New Jersey leadership, including Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh and State Senator Benjie Wimberly.
At the heart of the agreement is a unique living and training arrangement. Professional athletes from both the Jackals and the Cosmos will now call the William Paterson campus home during their seasons.
Key components of the collaboration include:
- Housing & Training: Players will utilize on-campus housing, University dining services, and state-of-the-art athletic facilities for practice and training.
- Student Internships: WP students will receive priority access to internships in high-demand fields such as sports data analytics, athletic training, marketing, and stadium operations.
- Community Presence: The University will maintain a dedicated booth on the Hinchliffe Stadium concourse during games to facilitate community outreach and recruitment in Paterson.
- Local Perks: Discounted game tickets will be made available to all William Paterson students and employees.
The partnership is a homecoming of sorts for William Paterson University, which was founded in 1855 as the Paterson City Normal School. By aligning with Hinchliffe Stadium—a National Historic Landmark and one of the few remaining Negro League stadiums in the country—the University is doubling down on its commitment to the “Silk City.”
“This innovative collaboration reflects our shared values of opportunity, access, and excellence,” Richard Helldobler, president of William Paterson University said. “We continue to maintain strong community ties throughout Paterson, and we are excited by the opportunity to forge new ones.”
Baye Adofo-Wilson, owner of HSP, the Jackals, and the Cosmos, emphasized the importance of placing young professional athletes in an educational environment. “I wanted us to grow together and for the players to have a space where they feel safe… I think it’s important for them to be in an educational environment.”
Local leaders were quick to praise the deal as a win for regional economic development and student empowerment.
- Mayor Andre Sayegh described the partnership as a “victory” for the city, noting that “positioning a place like Paterson for progress is not a spectator sport. It’s a team sport.”
- Senator Benjie Wimberly highlighted the “hands-on opportunities” for students, noting that the energy from the University campus will now flow directly into the heart of the city’s sports district.
The Jackals and Cosmos will play their home games at the beautifully restored Hinchliffe Stadium, creating a dynamic ecosystem where students, professional athletes, and city residents intersect.
