Friends of Encore Learning hits record $25K scholarship milestone for Stockton University

What began 18 years ago as informal educational gatherings in private living rooms has evolved into a powerful philanthropic engine for South Jersey higher education.

Stockton University announced Tuesday that the nonprofit Friends of Encore Learning (FELS) has donated $25,000 to the Stockton Foundation. This marks the largest annual award in the organization’s history and will fund scholarships for the 2026-27 academic year, specifically targeting high-achieving juniors and seniors in the School of Education.

The journey of FELS is a testament to the “anchor institution” philosophy embraced by Stockton. The group provides affordable lifelong learning courses—ranging from $25 to $65—covering topics such as Constitutional issues, art appreciation, and 20th-century American composers.

  • Then: Small classes held in neighbors’ homes.
  • Now: A thriving community of 200 members with classes held at the Margate Public Library and Stockton’s Atlantic City campus.
  • The Impact: Since 2008, FELS has contributed more than $150,000, supporting nearly 120 students.

“You have built a thriving community of lifelong learners, and that same spirit is helping our students chase their goals,” Dan Nugent, Stockton’s vice president of advancement said.

The $25,000 gift is strategically aimed at students within the School of Education. By alleviating the financial burden for upperclassmen, FELS ensures that local student-teachers can focus on their certifications and community impact.

Beyond scholarships, the group has historically diversified its support, contributing to:

  • Stockton’s Food Assistance Program
  • The Student Relief Fund
  • The Foundation Scholarship Benefit Gala

Stockton University President Joe Bertolino noted that the partnership aligns perfectly with the university’s latest Strategic Plan. By fostering a social and intellectual hub for seniors in Longport, Margate, Ventnor, and Atlantic City, FELS provides a visible model of community building for younger students.

“When students see you interacting with each other and building community, that serves as a model for students who otherwise may see a challenging world,” Bertolino told the group during a recognition event on March 6.

As the nonprofit expands its reach into Ocean City, Linwood, and Egg Harbor Township, its dual mission of personal enrichment and student advocacy continues to set a benchmark for regional philanthropic partnerships in New Jersey.
