BINJE on the Beat

We hear it all the time: ‘You’re everywhere’ — why being out and about is key to success in journalism

There was a trip to Atlantic City for a fireside chat.

A stop in Belleville for a non-profit gala.

A ride to East Rutherford for a transportation talk.

A run to Carlstadt for a business launch.

And a drive to Harrison for a PATH trip to Jersey City for a ribbon cutting.

All in 48 hours.

BINJE on the BEAT isn’t just a popular series of posts on LinkedIn It’s our operating
system. Being “everywhere” isn’t a flex — it’s the job.

Being at events in person not only allows you to get a nuance that never comes across
in a press release; it lets you see the story behind the story — and often, more than
one. It’s not unusual for BINJE to get three or four stories from a single event.

But that’s not why we go.

Being at events allows us to have quick conversations with our long line of sources —
the twominute chats in the corner, the whispered asides, the “you didn’t hear this from
me” moments. And it provides an opportunity to create new sources.

To be sure, the miles add up.

In our first year, BINJE put nearly 15,000 miles on our car. April, thanks to a number of
trips to South Jersey, was one of two months in which we topped 2,000 miles.

Is it tiring? Not really. When you have passion for what you do, you always will have the
energy to do it. And you’d be surprised how many stories get written in your head
somewhere on the Turnpike or the Parkway.

Besides, all this travel follows a golden rule of journalism: You never find a story in the
newsroom.

That’s why BINJE is always on the beat.
