Newark landmark reimagined: La Casa de Don Pedro opens ‘El Barrio Wellness’ center

A prominent Newark landmark is returning to its community roots with a powerful new purpose. On Nov.13, La Casa de Don Pedro, a leading Newark-based community development nonprofit, will celebrate the grand opening of its El Barrio Wellness center at 76 Clinton Avenue, the former site of the beloved “El Club del Barrio.”

Once a critical gathering place for Puerto Rican families and a resource during the HIV/AIDS and drug crises of the 1980s, the three-story brick building has been completely transformed to address today’s most urgent challenge: community mental health.

The El Barrio Wellness center is poised to become a model for culturally relevant care, built upon a unique philosophy and substantial investment.

  • Liberation Health Model: The facility offers bilingual, trauma-informed counseling for children, adults, and families, delivered through a “Liberation Health” model. This approach goes beyond individual issues, actively addressing the cultural context and systemic barriers that impact community well-being.
  • Rooted in Lived Experience: Leaders describe the center’s vision as “for us, by us,” ensuring that mental health care is grounded in the lived experiences of Newark’s residents to promote empowerment.
  • The new center is the result of more than $1.2 million in investment, with key backing from partners like RWJBarnabas Health. La Casa de Don Pedro plans for rapid expansion of services:
  • The facility will soon expand its staff to include 15-20 clinicians.
  • Future plans include the addition of early-childhood and school-based mental health services.

La Casa’s President and CEO, Peter Rosario, emphasized the importance of homegrown solutions.

“Too often, solutions come from outside our neighborhoods. El Barrio Wellness is built by the people it serves—and rooted in the same spirit that made El Club del Barrio a beacon decades ago,” Rosario said.

The opening on Nov. 13 is anticipated to be a major community event, featuring remarks from Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and other local leaders. The center is being hailed as a resource that could “reshape how mental health care reaches diverse communities.”
