Michael Johnson will announce today that he is resigning as president of the New Jersey Innovation Institute, leaving the post to assume leadership of a company, BINJE has learned.
Johnson came to NJII in the fall of 2023 after an incredibly successful career as an entrepreneur, including a spot on the prestigious Forbes 30 under 30 in 2017.
Visikol, the health care imaging technology company based in Hampton that he co-founded in 2016, was sold in 2021 in a deal worth up to $19.5 million.
Johnson, who held positions at Johnson & Johnson and NASA earlier in his career and earned a degree in biology from Muhlenberg College as well as a Ph.D. in microbiology from Rutgers University.
A devoted family man and father of two, Johnson authored a book, 1% Dad, which he says offers a brutally honest, no-fluff guide for men who refuse to choose between family, fitness and success.
NJII is a highly regarded nonprofit NJIT-affiliated institute that accelerates innovation and technology translation across New Jersey’s key sectors, including AI/ML, healthcare, defense and entrepreneurship.
In simpler terms, it is dedicated to leveraging the resources of the New Jersey Institute of Technology to accelerate innovation and foster collaboration among industry, academia, and government.
Johnson’s departure comes during a time of change at Newark-based NJIT. Provost John Pelesko will begin serving as interim president at the school on Aug. 4, following the retirement of President Teik Lim.
