NJIT President Teik Lim announces retirement following four-year tenure

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and its Board of Trustees have jointly announced that University President Teik Lim will retire, effective August 3, 2026.

Lim has served as the university’s ninth president since taking office on July 1, 2022. School officials confirmed his upcoming departure marks a planned leadership transition to allow Lim to pursue a new chapter of personal and professional interests.

University officials emphasized that Lim’s departure comes at a highly positive operational juncture for the Newark-based public research institution.

During his four years at the helm, Lim focused heavily on elevating NJIT’s competitive standing, culminating in the launch of the university’s comprehensive 2030 strategic framework, titled NJIT Makes An Innovation Nexus.

“This is the right moment for me to step away and for NJIT to begin its next chapter, and I do so with great confidence in what we have built together,” Lim said in the announcement. “I am proud to say that I have accomplished everything I set out to do and I am very optimistic about NJIT’s future.”

The university’s governing board expressed its gratitude for Lim’s focus on student outcomes, research commercialization and entrepreneurial infrastructure.

“On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, we extend our sincere gratitude to President Lim for his service and unwavering commitment to NJIT and its mission,” Robert Cohen, chair of the Board of Trustees said. “We are grateful for all that he has given to this institution and to the students, faculty, and staff he has served so admirably.”

Lim will remain fully active in his executive capacity until his August retirement date, working directly alongside the board to oversee the transition process and preserve continuity across the university’s academic and research operations.
