South Jersey Transportation Authority begins transition to all-electronic tolling

The first overhead tolling gantry on the Atlantic City Expressway was installed last week — the first major step in the transition to All-Electric Tolling (AET), according to the South Jersey Transportation Authority.

The gantry structure over the roadway at milepost 40.1 -40.3 (between Exits 38 and 41), was hoisted into place and secured onto support columns located on either side of the expressway.

This work is a key milestone in the authority’s move to a more efficient and contactless tolling system, which will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance safety on the Atlantic City Expressway.

The authority previously said construction and installation of the all-electronic toll system “should be substantially complete” by January 2026. It noted that all construction, including toll plaza demolition, should conclude by October 2026.

The 47-mile highway currently collects tolls at two “barrier” plazas and five sites on entrance and exit ramps, according to the authority’s website.
