Derq, an MIT-spinoff and leader in AI-powered intelligent transportation systems, has announced a massive infrastructure deployment to support the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Championship.
The real-time safety and traffic analytics platform is being integrated into 95 strategic sites surrounding MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. The large-scale rollout reflects a broader push by global cities to modernize infrastructure ahead of high-volume international events.
With more than 1 million visitors expected to travel throughout the New York–New Jersey region during the tournament, the deployment targets major highways and surface streets weaving through the Meadowlands area. The submarket presents unique operational hurdles due to its blend of high everyday commuter volume and sudden, event-driven congestion.
Derq’s AI platform will process live video feeds from existing roadway cameras to instantly detect and report critical safety conditions, including:
- Crash and fire detection
- Wrong-way driving incidents
- Pedestrian and right-of-way intrusions
- Animal detection on active roadways
- Highly detailed traffic patterns and localized vehicle counts
The resulting live data streams directly into NJDOT’s Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), enabling state operators to anticipate road hazards and proactively manage traffic flow during peak event windows.
“Major events like the World Cup require transportation agencies to anticipate risks, adapt to changing conditions and operate more proactively,” Georges Aoude, co-founder and CEO of Derq said. “By delivering continuous insights and real-time alerts, we enable transportation agencies to better anticipate risks, adapt to changing conditions, and operate more proactively.”
The comprehensive Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) needs assessment and technical specifications were executed by Michael Baker International, an effort that earned the company a prestigious Transportation Achievement Award from the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).
National engineering firm HNTB is leading the physical integration and rollout of the project, partnering with Derq and regional distributor SCP Signal Control Products to bring the AI analytics online.
