BINJE’S Best Power Players 2026: L to M

His efforts at AvalonBay, one of the most successful multifamily builders in recent memory, are legendary. Ladell, however, is leaving a legacy at the Rutgers Center for Real Estate, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Already a sought-after lecturer, Ladell is hoping to create an endowment that would allow the center to compete with similar programs across the country.

Lalavee, the head of one of the most impactful locals in the state, always is a step (or two) ahead of the rest. He’s ensuring IUOE 825 is getting a steady stream of work from the Gateway Tunnel project — and working to develop the next generation of leaders through a transformative educational initiative. Want more? Lalevee recently got a black belt — in artificial intelligence.

Lazare is a year into her role as regional president — one in which she leads the bank’s local growth and community engagement initiatives — but her experience is much deeper. Lazare, who joined M&T in 2013 as a senior relationship manager with business banking, has more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry, having previously worked with JPMorgan Chase, Wachovia and Valley National Bank.

Think Newport is finished? Think again. LeFrak is building out the several remaining parcels at Newport in Jersey City in style. The recently started 47-story, 530-unit tower named 20 Long Slip will be the tallest in the neighborhood; the recently finished Bisby at 30 Park Lane North (385 units) is leasing quickly. All this while the neighborhood continues to be an attraction for film and television production.

Leslie, who was named CEO in March 2024, is an accomplished leader with more than 25 years of domestic and international experience in the water industry. She came to the role with years of experience, having previously served as CEO of SUEZ North America, where she was responsible for overseeing one of North America’s leading environmental companies, with revenues over $1.1 billion.

Loughlin is as prolific and as prominent a broker as there is in the state. Specializing in corporate real estate, particularly in the booming life sciences sector, he has represented global companies such as Merck, Pfizer and Nokia in major deals for labs, offices and strategic site development. He is a leader on JLL’s Americas Leadership Council and a fixture on lists such as these.

As president of New Jersey American Water, McDonough leads a group that serves nearly 3 million people in the state. And he’s happy to do it, almost one customer at a time. NJAM recently announced it will acquire the water system in Hopewell Borough, investing $7 million for infrastructure updates (replacing all utility-owned and customer-owned lead and galvanized steel service lines by 2031) for the 880 customer connections.

As head of the largest chamber in the state, Medina has great impact on the Hispanic business community and minority entrepreneurship. But that’s just the start of his influence. He is the creator, executive producer and host of “Que Pasa NJ?” on PBS and serves as a board member at New Jersey Transit and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. He also runs Robinson Aerial Surveys Inc., specializing in mapping and engineering.

A double honoree here. Medina gets a nod for his work at CBRE. Both a lawyer and a CPA, he’s an expert on real estate. His efforts on the potential new headquarters in Newark for Horizon BCBSNJ are worthy of note. But Medina also gets a nod for assuming the chair at the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, where he has had great impact on its executive committee for many years.

In his current role, he is responsible for leading the utility’s strategic growth initiatives, infrastructure investment and decarbonization efforts.

When Mokoid left the lead role at Atlantic City Electric to become head of Jersey Central Power & Light approximately 18 months ago, some were confused: Aren’t you a South Jersey guy, they asked? Mokoid loved his time at ACE, but is quick to note: He’s a Jersey guy. That was an appeal of the new job. “We cover 42% of the state, and that’s a tremendous responsibility,” he said. “We are not just in New Jersey; we are New Jersey.”

Montecalvo is the longtime leader of Bayshore, one of the most vertically integrated recycling facilities in the country.
