Origin
Founded in 1982 by Somerset County resident Marguerite Chandler, inspired by Mother Teresa’s message to “look for hunger in your own community,” The Food Bank Network of Somerset County began as a small volunteer effort in Somerville. Forty years later, it serves as a countywide network fighting hunger with dignity and compassion.
Mission/vision
The Food Bank Network of Somerset County distributes food and basic necessities to individuals and families in need throughout Somerset County. Guided by the belief that no one should go hungry, the organization serves anyone facing food insecurity, regardless of background or circumstance, while helping clients move toward greater stability.
Key programs
- Community food pantries & warehouse distribution: Operates multiple food pantries and a central warehouse to ensure countywide access to nutritious food.
- School Backpack Program: Provides weekend meals for children who rely on school breakfasts and lunches.
- Emergency Assistance & Basic Needs Program: Offers targeted support such as household essentials and emergency food boxes for families facing crises.

The Fall Harvest Fundraiser is the food bank’s signature event, uniting donors, local leaders and community advocates to support pantry operations and essential feeding programs. Proceeds help stock shelves, sustain the School Backpack Program and expand emergency food distribution.
Supporters/donors
It is supported by generous community members, local businesses, civic groups and faith-based organizations, along with Somerset County and municipal partners who share the mission to end hunger locally.
One more thing
The Food Bank Network recently unveiled a new heated, weather-protected awning at its Bridgewater pantry, donated by community partners. The structure offers clients a safe, comfortable place to wait during inclement weather and reflects the network’s ongoing commitment to serving neighbors with dignity and care.
