Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco, the Board of County Commissioners, and the County Parks Department have announced a transformative new chapter for one of the region’s most cherished cultural landmarks. The Bergen County Zoo has officially entered into an agreement with Relevant Strategies & Solutions (RS&S) to develop a “Facility Concept Plan Storybook”—a visionary roadmap designed to reimagine the zoo’s future.
The project, which was awarded during the Feb. 11 County Commissioners Public Meeting, is already in motion and is expected to reach completion by the end of July 2026.
The “Storybook” is more than a traditional master plan; it is a specialized planning and engagement tool that uses narrative storytelling, conceptual planning, and high-end digital renderings to illustrate the Zoo’s long-term vision. The final document will serve as a unifying framework for facility-related improvements over the next five to seven years, including a conceptual site plan and a list of strategic priorities.
“This process is about building a vision for the future of the Bergen County Zoo while continuing to strengthen the experience for families, improve animal habitats, and support the Zoo’s long-term sustainability,” Tedesco said.
To bring this vision to life, the County has tapped RS&S, a consulting firm renowned for its work with accredited zoos and aquariums nationwide. The firm will facilitate a collaborative process involving Zoo leadership, County officials, and the Friends of the Bergen County Zoo.
The planning process will include:
- On-site stakeholder discussions and strategic planning sessions.
- The development of conceptual renderings highlighting future animal habitats.
- Enhanced guest amenities and expanded educational experiences.
“The Bergen County Zoo plays an important role in conservation, education, and recreation for residents throughout our region,” Zoo Administrator Harry Peachey said. “This planning process will help us identify strategic priorities and better communicate the Zoo’s future vision to the community, partners, and potential supporters.”
Located within the sprawling Van Saun County Park, the Bergen County Zoo welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. County officials view this initiative as a critical step in ensuring the facility remains a top-tier destination for environmental education and family recreation.
“This initiative is about making sure the Bergen County Zoo continues to grow and evolve in a thoughtful, strategic way for future generations,” Steven Tanelli, chairman of the Board of County Commissioners said.
Beyond physical improvements, the Storybook is intended to be a powerful fundraising and sponsorship tool. By clearly defining project impacts and investment opportunities, the Zoo will be better positioned to secure the grants and private support necessary to turn these “storybook” concepts into reality.
