TESU $15K grant aims to help students finish what they started

Thomas Edison State University (TESU) received a $15,000 grant from the Carolyn Jane Scott Charitable Trust to help students overcome the final financial hurdles to earning their degrees. The funding supports the university’s Finish Line Scholarship program, which provides a critical incentive for adult learners who are just one to three courses away from graduating.

Removing financial barriers to graduation

The Finish Line Scholarship program was created to re-engage students who have “stopped out” of their studies, often with a majority of their credits already earned. By providing financial aid for their final courses, TESU helps students complete their degrees and unlock new professional opportunities.

According to TESU President Merodie Hancock, degree completion is a key priority for the university.

“We are deeply grateful to the Carolyn Jane Scott Charitable Trust and all of our Finish Line Scholarship donors for helping us provide these completion incentives,” she said. “Their support not only changes the lives of students and families but also strengthens our communities and workforce.”

Proven success and future goals

Since its launch, the program has disbursed $60,000 in scholarships to 52 students. Of these recipients, 38 have already graduated, and the remaining 14 are actively working to finish their degrees. This new grant, along with support from other donors like the Robert Sydney Needham Foundation and the Estate of Beverley Evans, will help TESU expand the initiative and empower up to 100 adult learners to finally complete their studies.

Provost Cynthia Baum highlighted the significant impact of the scholarships on students who are balancing jobs, family, and other responsibilities.

“For some, the cost of just a few final credits can be the barrier that prevents them from earning a degree,” she said. “The Finish Line Scholarships offer the last push they need to complete their studies, opening doors to new professional opportunities and personal growth.”
