HCCC Foundation’s 24th Annual Golf Outing returns June 22 to drive student success

The Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Foundation is preparing for its signature summer event, the 24th Annual Philip Johnston Memorial Golf Outing. Returning on June 22, the fundraiser invites community members, alumni, and business leaders to the prestigious Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park for a day of networking and philanthropy.

As one of the Foundation’s most anticipated annual events, the outing serves a critical purpose: raising funds to provide scholarships for HCCC students. By easing the financial burden of tuition, these scholarships allow students to focus on their academic goals and complete their degrees.

“Every dollar raised through the Foundation Golf Outing creates opportunities for our students,” HCCC President Christopher Reber said. “These scholarships help students focus on their studies, complete their degrees, and build brighter futures for themselves.”

Beyond the fairway, this year’s event highlights the success of the HCCC Student Golf Clinic, a program sponsored by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. The clinic, held at Skyway Golf in Jersey City, introduces students to the sport while fostering essential life skills, including confidence, professional networking, and patience.

The program’s impact is best exemplified by recent graduate Mariano Mejias. After joining the clinic last year, Mejias discovered a passion for the sport and the discipline required to master it. Now, as he heads to Kean University this fall, he plans to try out for the collegiate golf team—an ambition he says he never would have considered without the clinic.

“Before joining the student golf clinic, I always thought golf was inaccessible,” Mejias said. “Golf has taught me discipline, patience, confidence, and continuous improvement… This experience has shown me that with dedication and hard work, almost anything is possible.”

Students from the clinic will be present at the June 22 outing to demonstrate their skills and engage with participants, showcasing how such programs help students build the social capital necessary for professional success.
