MetLife Stadium achieves LEED Gold Certification ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026 final

In a major milestone for global sports and entertainment infrastructure, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford has officially achieved LEED v4.1 Gold Certification for Existing Buildings.

The prestigious designation, awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), comes as a direct result of a partnership with the FIFA World Cup 2026™ New York New Jersey Host Committee. It reinforces the region’s commitment to creating a lasting environmental legacy ahead of hosting eight tournament matches this summer—including the highly anticipated World Cup Final.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the preeminent global rating system for green buildings. It evaluates operational performance across critical areas including energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management, indoor environmental quality, and sustainable transportation.

MetLife Stadium secured the Gold rating following a rigorous 12-month performance review. The venue implemented a series of enhanced sustainability initiatives designed to slash its environmental footprint while simultaneously elevating the fan and employee experience.

“Achieving LEED Gold certification is a testament to our ongoing commitment to environmentally conscious operations, proving that premium guest experiences and rigorous green building practices can go hand-in-hand,” Ron VanDeVeen, president and CEO of MetLife Stadium said.

During the comprehensive 12-month review period, the 82,500-seat stadium maximized its operational efficiency by reinforcing several core environmental initiatives:

  • Energy Conservation: Utilizing on-site solar generation, transitioning to LED and motion-sensor lighting across the property, and deploying hybrid and electric operational vehicles.
  • Material Management: Streamlining waste diversion by separating and donating food waste and excess materials.
  • Advanced Recycling: Operating a rigorous recycling infrastructure featuring specialized baling for aluminum, PET plastics, and cardboard, alongside electronic and universal waste recycling.
  • Staff Engagement: Hosting annual staff training and awareness events to ensure universal green messaging is practiced by stadium personnel.

With this achievement, MetLife Stadium becomes one of only a select few NFL venues to secure LEED Gold certification for Existing Buildings under the strict v4.1 framework.

As the home of the New York Giants and New York Jets, MetLife Stadium routinely ranks as one of the busiest venues in the world. It was named the top stadium in the U.S. for both tickets sold and revenue in 2024 by Pollstar. In 2021, it also became the first NFL stadium to join the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s “Sports for Climate Action” framework.

Host Committee leaders emphasize that this milestone is about shifting the standards for future mega-events.

“Hosting the World Cup is about more than just the excitement of matches, it’s about the legacy we leave behind for our communities and future generations,” said Alex Lasry, CEO of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ NYNJ Host Committee. “Achieving LEED Gold certification demonstrates this commitment to making MetLife Stadium a model for sustainable large-scale events.”
